Stage 7 was into the hills again, with another very hot day on a tough, Classics-style course. We didn’t have much information about the race, again, but it was breakaways, with a group of 12 getting over 2 minutes before the halfway mark, with no riders from Boels-Dolmans, Wiggle High5 or ORICA-Scott, and the highest placed GC rider Sabrina Stultiens, who started 5:52 back. But shortly after that, the climbing would start again… Could the break make it?
The stage was marred by the really awful news that Claudia Cretti crashed at 90kph on one of the descents, and was airlifted to hospital after suffering severe head injuries. My thoughts with her family, friends and team, and of course Claudia, for a full recovery. It’s really horrible news, though, and a reminder of how much the riders risk, racing for our entertainment.
