Olympic videos – Rio 2016

Screen Shot 2016-08-06 at 22.09.44

We’re eventually going to see all the Olympic bike races put up on the Olympics Youtube, but until then, here’s what we can watch from the Rio 2016 women’s cycling – road race, ITT, track, BMX and MTB, with various other bits and pieces I’ve found.

If you want to compare and contrast what happened in Rio with previous Olympics, head to the Olympic Channel, where you can search by sport, and under the Rio 2016 videos, you’ll find highlights from previous years too.

A lot of the Olympic media is geo-restricted to countries (INRNG tells you more about restrictions, and how to see things despite them), so if there’s more you want to see, do try searching with your country’s broadcaster – I’ve added the BBC links because I can see them all from the UK, but hopefully you can find them in your country too. If there’s anything you especially enjoyed, please do tell me, and I’ll edit it in.

The Road Race

We kicked off with the Road Race, which was dramatic, in so many different ways  – Dan and I talked about it in our post-race podcast.  Highlights on the Olympic Channel, and on the Olympic YT:

Anna van der Breggen talks about it in this InCycle TV interview:

Videos and links, 2014 Track World Championships – days 3, 4 & 5

Last week I put up a post with the videos and links from Days 1 and 2 at the Track Cycling World Champs, and now here are the final three days, with even more amazing racing – the spectacular Points race, the Omnium, Sprint, Individual Pursuit and Keirin.  There’ll be videos and links to photos and results, so read on…

Individual Pursuit

The first medal from Friday was the Individual Pursuit, and in the bronze, two riders who raced each other through the Juniors – Amy Cure, who rides on the road for Lotto Belisol, and Ganna Solovey (who then had a steroid ban at aged 19).  Guess who I wanted to win?

and then, the gold race – former IP World Champion Sarah Hammer, and Jo Rowsell, who’d already won a Worlds gold as part of the British Team Pursuit squad.

Videos and links from the first two days of the 2014 Track World Championships

It’s been a a great couple of days from the Track World Champs in Cali, with all kinds of action – and it’s been strangely affected by the weather.  Track riders are usually in these very tightly controlled environments, with perfect heat and humidity, but the Cali velodrome has a roof, but no walls, so there have been issues with wind that riders will never usually have to deal with.

I’ve got a collection of videos and links from the women’s scratch race, team sprint, team pursuit and 500m – and remember, if you want to watch the next three days live, here’s my guide.

I’m starting with my favourite race so far, and the first medal race of Worlds, the women’s scratch:

Videos from the 2013 Manchester Track World Cup

This weekend was the first round in the 2013-14 Track World Cup, in Manchester, with the usual huge crowds and amazing riding.  I’ve got a collection of all the videos I’ve found so far, and I’ll add more in as I see them – I’m starting with the highlights reel from each day, then there’s a bit of a commentary about some issues there have been with the coverage, and then there’ll be the other videos….

Podcast 2013 – Episode 24 – FUCP

The-Unofficial,-Unsanctioned-Women's-UCI-Cycling-ShowThis week didn’t have as much racing as the last few weeks have had but somehow we still managed to fit in the Sparkassen Giro, BMX World Championships, Vallnord MTB World Cup and more before getting into the substantial number of issues, comments, interviews and general things that happened during the week. It’s a long episode, but it’s mostly happy (except for the title which is dedicated to someone rather special)! ( 1:34:10 MIN / 90.41 MB)

Here’s what we talked about this week….

Sarah got a bit excited about this weekend’s BMX World Championships and Vallnord MTB World Cup – she’s collected the videos from the races in one handy post.

Marianne Vos raced Vallnord XCo and didn’t do so well – but we love her even more for this tweet:

Okay, that was crap… I’ll skip the feeling from today’s race and look at the whole mtb experience this year. Happy I took this challenge!

— Marianne Vos (@marianne_vos) July 27, 2013

We love that she keeps pushing herself and learning – and admitting when things don’t go her way, and finding the good in it.

Videos from the 2013 National Cycling Championships

While I’m getting over-excited about the Giro Rosa starting tomorrow, here’s a selection of video from last week’s National Championships.  If you know of any more, add it to the comments and I’ll edit it in!

The Netherlands

First up is probably the biggest women’s cycling nations, the Netherlands.  There was no surprise when Ellen van Dijk won the ITT – she’s on fantastic form this season, getting better and better every year.

Here’s a highlights video from NOS and another video:

The road race was an interesting one.  By all rights, Marianne Vos should have been the favourite, but there’s no advantage to Rabobank-Liv/Giant if she won, because she’s already wearing the rainbow jersey – and it’s a good reward for a hard-working team-mate.  Lucinda Brand attacked in the second lap and solo-ed for 100km, while Vos, Annemiek van Vleuten and their team-mates enjoyed burnign off all the competition, attacking on the hills and frustrating the chase on the flat.  Eventually, only Van Dijk could keep up with them, until a mechanical on the penultimate lap took her out of contention.  My favourite parts were watching Vos and AvV soft-pedal when they realised Van Dijk was in trouble, and only race away when they realised she was out – and how they waited until it was clear Brand had won before attacking each other mercillessly!
