Podcast 2017, Episode 15 – the octuplets

If last week was the treble, with three big races, this week it was octuplets!

Dan has been in Tokyo for the last week, and missed out on all the racing, so I catch him up on the action from the USA Crits Speed Week, the Festival Elsy Jacobs in Luxembourg, the Tour de Yorkshire in the UK, and over in France, the first round of the 2017 Downhill MTB World Cup in Lourdes.  Along the way we talk mindgames in racing, the implications of having eight different women’s cycling livestreams over three days, and a lot more.  And I told him about my adventures on BBC Woman’s Hour, and recording with the Wheel Suckers Podcast.

We didn’t get around to talking about everything from last week, so the post below is packed with links, videos, and other things I’ve seen around the internet in the last week.  Of course I recommend it!

This week’s women’s cycling news, videos and links

I was really honoured to be a part of the BBC Radio 4 Women’s Hour that was dedicated to women’s cycling.  Usually the show features multiple topics, but because it’s such a big subject, they had a whole programme dedicated to it, recorded as-live in the London Bike Kitchen.   It includes MTB with Tracey Moseley, road racing with Rochelle Gilmore and Grace Garner, the history of women and cycling with Dr Astrid Swenson, saddle sores with vulval health expert Dr Jane Sterling, and Jenni Gwiadowski, the Director of the LBK, talks everyday cycling, and teaches presenter Jane Garvey to mend a puncture (which you can also watch as a video).  It should be archived here for all time, so please do listen!

Podcast 2016, Episode 15- In Real Life

Podcast logoIt’s been four years in the making but this week’s podcast is possibly the most special of them all so far for the simple reason that for the very first time Sarah and Dan are recording in real life, together in the same room. Is this the episode in which someone is murdered? Is this the episode in which bickering and fighting ends the whole project? Or do we simply discuss the Tour de Yorkshire, GP Elsy Jacobs, Gracia Orlova, the forthcoming para-cycling and a bunch of cool cycling events? The only way to find out is to press play and enjoy the ride! (1:00:53 MIN / 00.0MB)

Podcast logoIt’s a huge show this week with racing from four continents to cover, so we cover it quickly. There’s also some interesting news and articles that we manage to squeeze in, along with all the swearing and joking you’ve come to love. Following the weekend’s live racing – the 2015 Gracia-Orlová, Tour of the Gila and Festival Elsy Jacobs

So it’s a busy, busy weekend for top tier women’s cycling, with 3 UCI-level races.  And here’s how you follow them:

If you want a one-stop-shop for all three, I’ve updated my twitter list with everyone I can find who’s live-tweeting from the races, with photos and more.  Hopefully they’ll all be hashtagging like crazy so it should be relatively easy to follow – and I’ll put links to any videos I find into Monday’s podcast post.

Podcast 2013 Episode 12 – Stabby Stabby

Podcast logoThis week we open with Dan talking himself out of a pseudo-job while Sarah imagines stabbing him through the computer. We also recap the Luxembourg something something Elsy Jacobs race in all its sprint-tacular glory! We also take a moment to sympathise (no really!) with Team Rusvelo over the difficulty of finding Czech towns as we recap Gracia Orlova. We also take some time to celebrate the return of Evie Stevens to racing, along with Sarah’s favourite Emma Pooley. We travel to the far side of the world to point out the Tour of the Mersey Valley, a 3 stage race in Tasmania which magically proved you can put good, informative and entertaining video highlights on the internet in a timely fashion (EVERY OTHER RACE TAKE NOTE – Fleche Wallone I’m glaring at you… still). We take a look at some cool blogs and things we’ve found. [DAN: I have to apologise for totally fucking up the name of Kimberley Wells’ team, which is actually Fearless Femme] We also run through the complete list of acceptable reasons for residents of the UK to not attend the Bedford 3 day race shortly coming up. In summation, this is a fine podcast of great vintage, please to be enjoying. (1:10:55 MIN / 68.09 MB)

Podcast 2013 Episode 11 – Digressions

Podcast logoThis week Sarah and I digress. A lot. It’s like this game I used to play when I was at university and someone would be trying to tell a joke and I would interrupt them to ask really specific and deliberately pointless questions. Like, they’d say “A priest, a rabbi and a cowboy walked into a bar…” and I’d say things like “An orthodox rabbi?” and “What sort of priest? Catholic or Episcopalian?” or “Did the cowboy have pearl-handled pistols?” This week’s episode is exactly like that.

We also talk about a bunch of races including Omloop van Borsele, Dwars door de Westhoek, Sea Otter, Gracia Orlova, Elsy Jacobs and more. There are some excellent blogs from Ashleigh Moolman and Marijn de Vries. But even if none of that stuff grabs your attention, you should at least listen to hear Sarah try to explain what she knows about bikes. It’s fucking hilarious. (1:13:46 MIN / 70.83 MB)
