2016 Social Media Jersey – March nominations thread

Welcome to the first month in the 2016 Unofficial, Unsanctioned Women’s UCI Social Media Jersey competition!  This is where we can share, thanks and reward the amazing riders and teams in the women’s pelotons whose fantastic social media makes being a cycling fan even better!

The rules of the competition are over here, but basically, if you’ve seen any social media (including blogs, twitter, instagram, videos etc etc) on riders and teams’ sites and accounts that you’ve enjoyed from 27th February to 3rd April, nominate them, and I’ll add them to the post.  At the end of the month, we’ll then vote for the winners in 3 categories – riders from the Top 20 (UCI World Tour) road teams; best team media’ and best non-World Tour pro riders (inc track, BMX, cyclocross, MTB etc.

You can nominate by sending a specific example of their social media into the comments, to me on twitter, or by emailing me at prowomenscycling [at] gmail [dot] com.  You can ask me any questions too that way, and it all can be as anonymous, or not, as you like – and if you want some places to start looking for rider media, I have a twitter list of women cyclists and teams, and Chloe Hosking has a list of road riders who blog.  Get nominating!

The 2016 Social Media Jersey – how it will work

We’re about to start the 2016 Road Season, so it’s time to re-launch the Unofficial Unsanctioned Women’s UCI Social Media Jersey!

Back in 2012, Dan and I ran the Social Media Jersey competition, to celebrate riders from the women’s peloton who helped us enjoyment of the sport.  Thanks to our amazing readers, we raised over US $3,500, which was sent as prizes to 11 riders who were voted the winners by so many fantastic readers.  We had a lot of fun, and ever since then we’ve been talking about doing it again, in a different form.

The Social Media Jersey does what the name suggests, giving us the chance to share content from professional women cyclists that we’ve loved, and to reward riders and teams for making following the sport so much more fun.

Podcast 2013 Episode 14 – Jealous!

Podcast logoWhat a week! It’s the 1 year anniversary since we started saying dumb stuff on the internet! We talk social media jersey, Tour of California, harrassment, racing and all sorts of stuff. Not to be missed!

Well sort of. As it turned out, Sarah and I recorded this week’s podcast literally about an hour before the news about the Tour of Languedoc. Anyway, that’s all turned to 147 different shades of shit, so make sure to check out Sarah’s post to try and help us work out what the fuck’s going on over there. It’s a longer episode this week but that’s only because we’ve got a lot of ground to cover. Pour yourselves a strong whisky (or whiskey!) and settle in. (1:15:32 MIN / 72.16 MB)

You can stream the best 1 year old women’s cycling podcast here.

You can also load it up via your Tunes of the i over here.

Happy podcast birthday!  We’re one year old today!

More cyclists raising money for good causes

One of the fun things about sending out prizes for the Social Media Jersey has been hearing what riders are doing with the money.  Whether it’s being put towards helping them travel to races, enabling them to have a lovely treat, or just going towards living costs, it’s made me really happy that all of us, working together, have made a little difference in the riders’ lives.  And some of them have asked that we donate their prizes to causes close to their hearts – so I think it’s time for a second edition of cyclists (and a cyclist’s relative) raising money for charity – some Jersey winners and some not, but all great causes that I’m sure they’d love if you could support.

Emma Johansson is a long-term supporter of the Barncancer Fonden, a Swedish children’s cancer charity who run an annual fundraising bike ride through Sweden, the Ride of Hope.  Emma is using her $300 Jersey prize to kickstart a campaign for this year’s Ride, and you can support it here.  You might need google translate to help with the page, but it’s very easy indeed, and SUCH a good cause!  Emma’s fundraising drive runs right through to next year’s Ride, ending on 31st August 2013.  And yeah, I *am* thinking that cycling through Sweden for a great charity sounds like the perfect holiday!

Photos!!! Social Media Jersey Winners in photographic form

Mark it down in your calendars kids! Today we received our very first photo of one of our Social Media Jersey prize winners with their prize. Sarah’s posted the general prize update here, so I won’t re-hash all that. What we will do is use this post as the place to post new photos as we get them. We may also add comments or quotes from the winners, or possibly make up stories (hint: the made up stories are italicised).

20/11/12 Here’s our overall winner, Emma Trott, wearing her Jersey!

Emma is the winningest winner we’ve ever had when it comes to the Social Media Jersey and we’re proud that she’s added such a prestigious award to her palmares at such an early age. Emma is also the youngest ever winner of the social media jersey, the best looking, the richest, the funniest, the smartest, the toothiest, the hairiest, the smelliest, the sweetest, the kindest, the most articulate, the Britishest, the fastest and the fury-est. Good job Emma!

Isn’t that great?  THANK YOU TO EVERYONE FOR MAKING THIS HAPPEN!!!

We’ve asked the winners if they can take photos of themselves with the fabulous prizes, and anything we get, we’ll post here, so you can see them in real life.  And if you want to remind yourself who won what, check out the prize post – and here’s the post that started it all…  More to come very soon!

Podcast Episode 22 – For People Who Aren’t Sad, Geeky Dans

Sarah picks on my twitter habits and we manage to not talk about Rabobank for at least the first 5 minutes of the episode. Then we break the news/rumour that Garmin are looking to take over Rabo’s women’s team. Dan reads another piece submitted as part of the Social Media Jersey project, and Sarah provides a full update on where things are up to with distributing prizes. Also you can hear Sarah’s neighbours doing renovations!
