Podcast 2013 Episode 30 – That Was Absurd!

Podcast logoThis week’s episode is named in honour of the first thing I said to Sarah as soon as we stopped recording. This week’s podcast was absurd people! LOTS of digressions (some of them are even funny) and HEAPS of cool racing and cycling stuff. Sarah and I channel our inner French mime abilities (we suck at the silent bit) and talk about everything from cakes to beatings. We do also talk about actual bike racing with the Boels Rental Ladies Tour, the Tour de l’Ardeche, the Tour of the Murray and heaps more! As always, there are lots of videos and a round up of the week’s news with heaps of links for you below. Enjoy the absurdity! (1:11:41 MIN / 68.88 MB)

Things we talked about this week

Last week’s racing

It was the Boels Rental Ladies Tour, the Tour de l’Ardèche and the Tour of the Murray River – Sarah has a post with all the videos and results and photo links on Podium Café, but here are some things we liked especially

  • Home-made aerial footage of Boels Tour Stage 6:

Tiff is now holding the green jersey. Wait a minute, I have to read this again… Tiffany Cromwell is holding the GREEN jersey, given to the race’s best SPRINTER! That’s right! THE BEST SPRINTER. TIFFANY!!!

  • This photo of Chloe Hosking winning Stage 5 of the Boels Tour
  • This interview with Elke Gebhardt after winning Boels Stage 4, and her answer to “what did you do in the last kilometre?”

Our friend Swordpanda rode her first ever cyclocross race, in Newbury – and didn’t come last!  Here’s her blog about it.

More videos!

Régis, the French cycling/clowning/tourism/Elvis/art/dance film…. Sarah really enjoyed it, Dan found it too weird, even for him.  Watch it, and find out more about it here.

Shit MTB girls say:

Sarah saw that through this interview with Ana Raecke, one of the women who made it, on Total Women’s Cycling  – and it lead to this other film that trio made, Ladies Night, including riding MTB at night (click through and watch) – and for more on Ana, check out her website.

Helen Wyman‘s starting a series of video diaries – here’s number 1, from Vermont:

Wiggle Honda put out a promo for a film they’re making on their quest to win the Team Time Trial at the 2013 Road World Championships

Two little videos from Giant, featuring Marianne Vos:

A little film on Hitec‘s Julie LethKarl Lima says you should watch it anyway, even if you don’t understand Danish!

UPDATE!  The lovely Jens has translated some of the video, and it’s got some very funny parts of it.  Click through to this comment on Podium Café!

We didn’t talk about this, but the UCI has just put out a 26-minute video from the Open de Suède Vårgårda TTT and Road Race and the GP de Plouay World Cups:

Byron, aka Confused Spider, translated an interview with Marianne Vos, where she talked about why she couldn’t ride the Boels Tour.  It’s in the comments on Podium Café, and includes:

‘’My left side didn’t do as I wanted anymore, the treatment in hospital (on the inflammation of the sacroiliac joint) has helped, but the inflammation is still there for a part. I was startled when the doctor told me such an inflammation is caused by overloading the body, and if I wanted to continue racing on this level, I had to take more rest. I will still do the world championships cyclocross in own country, but I will take more rest (talking about the upcoming CX season).’’

We forgot to talk about this, but Emilia Fahlin was recently caught in an apocalyptical ice storm, while training in the Pyrenees.

Retired British track sprinter Vicky Pendleton says inequality kept her away from road cycling – Sarah has Feelings

United Healthcare have announced some big American names for the women’s teams they’re starting next year.

Gillian Carleton is racing well on the track!  Go Gillian!

Kathryn Bertine will be launching a website to go with the Le Tour Entier petition for a women’s Tour de France on Thursday.  Watch out for more on the LeTourEntier twitter.

Upcoming racing

The final two stage races of the 2013 European season start this week – the Giro della Toscana and the Rás na mBan.  Sarah wrote a preview with how to follow them both, on Podium Café, with links to other previews and information – but we did enjoy Marv Barras’ preview on Toscana, for ORICA-AIS, which included:

I like going to Toscana to get a look at what the opposition will have to offer. But really, I like going to Toscana, period. It’s warm. We race from one small village to the next, across valleys covered in olive groves and vineyards. It’s full of history and interesting sites. The people just love cycling and the crowds are always good and intense.

The food is sensational. A typical fare will wet your appetite with an antipasto of cured meat and cheeses, followed by an entree of delicious pasta. Next is the main course, usually grilled meat or fish with a side of veggies. You finish with the dolce: a small serve of gelato or a baked treat.

This week it’s also the MTB World Cup in Hafjell, Norway.  As always, it’ll be streamed live on Red Bull tv – click through the links to get the count-down that shows you the time conversion to your time-zone (or to watch the footage after the race)

Sarah will be enjoying the usual pre- and post-race Downill coverage by Dirt Magazine and Pinkbike – and watching the Red Bull bike site and the competition website for more information about all the races
