Another GREAT stage of Qatar

Stage 3 down, 1 more to go at the Tour of Qatar, and I’m still loving it.  That surprises me – it’s 100% flat, lots of long, straight roads, with only the wind and sand providing interest to the parcours, so it’s not the first race I would have chosen to be streamed live…. but of course, I’m forgetting – the women’s peloton make the dullest course super-exciting!

So, this video is the final 7km, another stage win for Kirsten Wild of Argos-Shimano.  I loved watching her race this – she’s SUCH a clever rider, and was using all her skills from the track and from Dutch sprinting, covering every tiny hint of an attack, zigzagging across the road and not letting anyone get away with anything.  I did feel for Chloe Hosking, who lost her overall GC lead after a puncture at 500m to go meant she couldn’t contest the sprint, but Wild was spectacular.  And I grinned at this tweet from Ellen van Dijk (Specialized-lululemon), who finished the stage in second place, and later tweeted this…

Going into the final stage tomorrow, Wild leads the GC, with Hosking in second place, three seconds behind her, Gracie Elvin (Orica-AIS) at +16″, Van Dijk fourth at +17″ and her team-mate Trixi Worrack fifth at +27″.  With intermediate sprint bonifications, lots of wind, and doubtless more breakaway action, it’ll be tough for Wild to keep that lead – but she won the first two editions of the race, in 2009 and 2010, and was third overall last year, so she’s got the experience…  can’t wait to watch!  It’ll be live from 11:30am GMT on Al Jazeera, repeated at 18:30 and 21:00 – and check out Podium Café for a livethread to discuss the action, including any links to English commentary we find.
