Videos – Mont-Sainte-Anne MTB World Cups and more
This weekend, as well as the Junior Track World Championships, it was the Monte-Sainte-Anne round of the 2013 Road World Cup, with cross country and downhill rounds, and lots of great video.
XCo World Cup
The Cross Country World Cup started with a track walk video from Canadian star, Emily Batty. It was a gorgeous day and a beautiful course, with steep climbs and descents, and heavy rock section through the woods.
World and Olympic Champion Julie Bresset, was out solo early, attacking in the first lap. She’s been injured this year, so it was great to see her there – but she was chased hard by Tanja Zakelj, Katerina Nash and Maja Wloszczowska - and was caught in the penultimate lap by World cup leader Zakelj…. then in the last lap, Nash and Wloszczowska caught them too, and it was all attacks and action on the climbs!
Here’s the full race video – with the explosive, exciting last lap starting at 1:27:42 – and here’s the highlights video:
This was a great win for Katerina Nash – her first ever MTB World Cup! Nash was born in the Czech Republic, but has been based in the USA for years, and started as a cross country skier, competing in two Winter Olympics before turning to cycling, where she rides for the Luna Pro Team, racing MTB in summer and cyclocross in winter. She’s always a fierce competitor, and winning her first World cup at 36 is just going to spur her on to do more! Full results here – and there’s a great photo essay from the whole day on Pinkbike.
Downhill World Cup
The fourth round of the Downhill World Cup was all about one big question – could Rachel Atherton possibly continue her unbroken run of World Cups wins this season?
One reason I really enjoy Downhill is how much we get to see. It’s so fast and furious, it’s fantastic to see the glimpses of the work that goes into the race – all the track walks and practice sessions. Here’s some of the race coverage I enjoyed:
- Claudio Calouri’s helmetcam track run video on Red Bull
- Track Walk photo essays on Pinkbike and Dirt Magazine – and Dirt’s trackwalk video
- Practice day photo essay on Dirt magazine and Pinkbike – and Dirt’s video
- Qualifications photos from Pinkbike and Dirt – and Dirt’s video from the Qualis
- Saturday practice day photos on Pinkbike and on Dirt
In the women’s race, it was a crazy-fast competition, but all eyes were on fastest qualifier Rachel Atherton…. but this was the round that broke that run, after she crashed and landed on her head out of camera-shot at the top of the crash, and then crashed again on the rocky sections. You can hear her talk about her run on Dirt’s post-race audio interview with her - but even without the crash, Emmeline Ragot had been incredibly fast, could Rachel have beaten her? Listen to Ragot’s great post-race interview on Dirt. It’ll be a lot of fun to see what happens at the World Championships at the end of August.
Here’s the full coverage on Red Bull tv, with the post-race interviews, and women’s and men’s races – and here’s Dirt’s video of the World Cup, mostly the men, but some clips of women, and lovely post-race interview with Ragot.
Update! And video from MSA from women’s & junior men’s women’s team, Lapierre Gravity Republic, with a cute interview with Ragot, looking VERY happy after the race:
